Backlit display for Game Boy Color

Do you have a Game Boy Color and feel like using it?

You've probably noticed that when you turn it on, the screen doesn't look as good as you'd expect it to... well, luckily we can fix that. In today's article we'll tell you about the new backlit display for the Game Boy Color, the IPS LCD v2.

Anyone who owns or has ever played with a Nintendo Game Boy Color will remember that despite having many virtues, such as backwards compatibility with GameBoy DMG-001, a more powerful processor, more RAM and a smaller weight and size, this handheld also had some weaknesses.

Among these weaknesses, possibly the most criticised today is the LCD screen, which at the time of its launch in 1998 allowed Nintendo to bring its handheld into the colour era, but can be a real headache if you try to play in low ambient light conditions. This is because the LCD screen on the Game Boy colour console is not backlit, as well as having very modest viewing angles and poor colour accuracy.

By using the IPS LCD v2 replacement kit all these setbacks disappear, taking the gaming experience to a new level by substantially improving the following points:

  • Backlit display with brightness adjustment.
  • IPS LCD screen, with excellent viewing angles, contrast and colour richness, better than the AGS-101 screens of GameBoy Advance SP or Nintendo DS.
  • Same aspect ratio as the original screen.
  • Fast screen refreshing, with no ghosting or artefacts.

Although the installation of the backlit display kit is not too complicated, it does require some modifications to the internal casing which, although not visible from the outside, are necessary to accommodate the new IPS display.

These modifications include the cutting of two plastic brackets that accommodate the original LCD and a small cut in the plastic bordering the steering crosshead and the inner edge of the crosshead itself, to avoid unnecessary pressure on the new backlit display.

Additionally, it is advisable to recess the plastic on the inside of the Game Boy Color to accommodate the new screen more securely.

We do not recommend venturing into installation if you have no previous experience in replacing or repairing screens of this type. It is an expensive material and quite delicate to handle, so think twice before messing up.

The process needs to be done without haste and failure to do it correctly may damage the IPS display, the flexible connection strip or both.

Once the new IPS display is installed, the results are simply spectacular and speak for themselves.
